Grabbing in higher ranges, PLEASE HELP ME
When doing vocal exercises, for example when they get really high and you are required to have a hootier/breathy sound to avoid grabbing, is it normal that after a certain point I can't make sound without feeling grabbing? ( just to confirm is grabbing like a tight compressed feeling in the throat?

Thank you and I would love any advice, this problem is really getting to me.
Thank you for replying,
Does this mean it is ok to feel like holding your breath at really high notes?
Can you develop a fuller voice at these pitches even if such a small amount of air is used?
Well it all depends.. It's complicated but I will say if you are feeling like your grabbing then you are very likely not on the right path, it should feel more like your sitting on top of the note no matter low or high.

is this normal?
When I am doing the exercises, as I go higher, i.e toward the end of the exercise, the sound on higher notes, the sensation is like when you do a high pitched, but soft scream. I dont feel the release. Please can I have some help/advice.

Thank you
check your swallowing muscle, check your larynx, also you can stick out your tongue and try to make those high notes, and see if there's any tension.

Also bending over at the waist is also a great help.

the videos will help you, really. Just check all those tips and lessons, listen to the explanations of everything, try to figure out the theory of the voice making, and you will finally know how to use the exercises.
Thank you for your advice, I will check those video and try those techniques asap! Also I would appreciate any more advice that anyone is willing to share Smile

Nay Nay nay help! please!
I have included a sound clip of nay nay nays- I am almost sure I am doing them comopletely wrong and I really need some advice or help. Thank you
I'm not sure if I get it right.
At first I can hear that you were afraid to break, so you were pulling a little bit.
you can check some tips like Vunerability In Your Scales, Pharyngeal Nay Exercise by Shelby, and really work on that pharyngeal spot.

And all tips are really helpful!
Thank you for your advice, I will check those tips asap! Smile Also I would appreciate any more advice that anyone is willing to share Smile

maximising head resonance / larynx positioning
As you sing higher, is it true that you should feel resonance behind nose/in head? How can you maximise this sound so that higher notes have more chest qualities, i.e. more power?

I have another question with regards to the larynx positioning, what happens when you have to belt a note? does it rise and is it supposed to? For example could you let me know what is happening in the following video of Lady Gaga's "edge of glory" live, specifically when she sings the highest parts. would you be able to explain the 'vocal placement' of the voice. I am hoping that using an example may make it easier to understand and incorporate.

How long should I stay on one lesson before moving on, and should I sing songs before my breaks are smoothed out?
As stated above
1. How long should I stay on a SS cd before moving on?

2. How should I sing while still learning all of this? Obviously as a beginner my mix is extremely weak assuming that I've properly found it. I had some singing lessons before I had ever heard  of Brett, unfortunately, the teacher wasn't a professional and basicly told me that I could reach high notes if I just pushed hard enough with my diaphragm. ( I know what you're probably thinking right now...ouch, big time) being in tune hasn't really been a problem for me and I've overcome a lot of strain by doing the exercises. So should I just not sing songs until I'm advanced enough? Or should I sing like I do now, only pulling chest a little bit? I can't really use Brett's methods publicly because I haven't developed them enough.

3. I actually went through the whole program (started in may- did I go too fast?) and am now realizing I should have payed more attention to detail instead of just going through the exercises.

Any comments/tips are very much appreciated
Thanks,
Mike
To L.L: thanks, thats kinda what I was thinking

Really? I seem to have a problem with E's and A's ( long) my throat tightens up when I sing them. Usually O's and mums help relax it
same here... building strong fundamentals is the key. As you have build them, you just have to do it - working from day to day.

Vocal Warm up help
I want to develop a 30 min vocal warm-up that I can do daily. I find that if I sing for a while, light and easy, i.e practicing/ rehearsing then my voice is ready and more easily controlled, this however is gradual and it takes more time. I want to get the same warmed up feeling but in a 30 min warm up. I really have no idea and I cant afford a vocal coach.
How should I prepare one and what should be in it.

I would really appreciate any help, advice or guidance. Thank you
I don't know if I am allowed to do that. That might violate the terms of copyright for it? As a general principal, I think you are safe to concentrate on light, easy exercises like lip rolls, vocal fry and humming.
I understand, thank you. Smile

Nay Nay Nays
I have found that I cant go very high in the nay nay nay exercise. Should I try to make the sound more nasally, or just keep within a comfortable range? Will I be able to go higher and higher the more I practice?
Grazie!
:-)
Huuuu!
I found an english translation of the very good text of bel canto maestro Mancini, cited above.
You can read it directly in the internet (site of Harvard University).

Here is the internet address:
http://www.archive.org/stream/practicalreflec00buzzgoog#page/n1/mode/2up

Such a text is far more similar to the concepts of SLS and SS, then a lot of today's texts about opera and classical singing...
Very interesting!

Tongue Trill- Help
I am practicing tongue trills and I notice that as I go higher into a more soprano range I may be using a little falsetto (but I am not sure)- so I start in a normal voice even in the higher scale then there will be one or two notes in falsetto before i return to the normal voice. Also I find that to get the higher notes in the scale towards the end of the exercise the sound goes wider in order to accommodate. I understand that tongue trills develop mix is this supposed to happen?
hi, johnlennon! it would really help if you would put up some audio of both your trills and the passages of song where the notes are giving you trouble. what you are saying is a little unusual, and i think it might be a simple placement issue, i.e., when you go to sing, your voice is placed differently, or your balance of resonance is not favoring your hitting those notes. but, i can't really be sure or give you specific help without hearing it.
by differently, i mean differently than the way it is placed in the trills

Larynx positioning
Is your larynx not supposed to move at all when singing? I am finding it difficult to keep the larynx neutral in general, especially when singing high notes. What should I be aiming to do in this respect? Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Thank you for your encouraging advice. I will keep practicing. Thank you
Hi LL,
I have been re-reading your post, if you don't mind me asking are you a vocal teacher? You always offer such good responses!
