My biggest strength and weakness in singing
I think I just figured out my main problem. My singing tends to reflect how I'm currently feeling. It has been my biggest strength, but now it seems to be my biggest weakness.

For example, I've been feeling very "blah" lately and have been trying to perform upbeat songs while I'm feeling rather depressed.

This problem is also what seems to be holding me back when I try to record. I find myself being so concerned about the recording, my intonation, and awkwardness of recording that I can't really escape into the song.

How do I handle these situations? Thanks.
I don't record (yet,) but I feel the same way you do as well; I have to be able to pour myself into a song emotionally, and when I'm down, it becomes hard to put that negative energy into an upbeat song. Try getting into the more positive mood by socializing with optimistic people. The great thing about hanging out with optimistic people is that it's really contagious, and you end up feeling a lot better. Exercise is an excellent option; gets the blood pumping, which means more blood to your vocal cords, which makes for better sound. Not to mention better breathing, and that it releases endorphins which makes for happier people! Smile

teeheeloveyou is so right. At least in my case, she hits the nail on the head. Stress has so many negative effects; throughout the school year I felt so stressed, and to top it off I found it difficult to sing because I felt like I was falling apart. Now that the summer is here and I'm under less stress and more of a loose environment, it's gone! Totally agree with the sleeping patterns thing! I've been going to sleep at 4:00 AM as of late to wake up at 9:00 AM. I find that that throughout the next day I feel like I'm pulling up chest voice and it becomes harder to sing freely because there's a certain tightness present even when not vocalizing! So I'm taking it upon myself to get plenty of good night's sleep to ensure my voice is in healthy shape for when I vocalize. Nothing worse than feeling like you're straining when you've gotten so used to the contrary!
Maybe you remember Jesse's Hesition Equals Tesions, don't you? Also, try to get yourself out of old-day habits. Remember that we always gonna follow a routine but this routine mustn't be necessarily the same every week or every month.

Don't worry. If you are in this path, it's because you trust your voice and you like the way it sounds, also you know where you can get to. So, give yourself some grace. If you are feeling off pitch, forget pitch. Sing with all your heart. Hear how horrible you may be sounding, yet, feel the joy of looking at it in a nice way. Get to know its just a period of your life. You are so much bigger than your voice.

Cheers, man.

I need a mentor
I'll try to keep this short.

I feel like I've taken myself as far as I can. I play guitar, keyboard, drums, and sing, but I feel like I've reached a plateau on all of them.

Any advice on finding a mentor or a teacher? I live in south Louisiana (down the road from where they film swamp people). I don't really know where to go. It's pretty rural out here.
Check out http://www.brettmanningstudios.com. This is where Brett Manning and his trained coaches teach the SingingSuccess method. If you can't make the trip to Nashville, you can take lessons over Skype.

BTW, We LOVE Swamp People here at SSTV Smile
Hey thanks for replying!

I have looked into Skype lessons. What's the details on that? And honestly, I find it strange to video chat with someone I never met in person (but I guess you have to do what you have to do).

It would be great if we had an associate coach in Baton Rouge. There isn't even an SLS associate in the area.

Thanks! Choot 'em!

Hey yall please vote for my original song ocean tide in this songwriting contest by texaco Country Showdown. Please vote And thank you so much if you do!!! (Be sure to vote everyday for this month!)
I used to do this years ago. Go on a keyboard and put it on the string setting. Then pick a note on the keyboard that you can sing easily, and just sing that note while you hold the key on the keyboard. You should be able to hear how out of tune you are and fixing your pitch should be really easy.
thank you very much!
