The Voice Blog Part 1 / 2: Why is Learning to Sing so Hard?!
Hey guys, the second section of the first voice blog, will be posting every Wednesday so keep your eyes peeled!

The Voice Blog Part 1 / 2: Why is Learning to Sing so Hard?!

The Voice Blog

Thanks Carl
Excellent write-ups, Wehden. And you have to work hard to get results; you're going to have really off days where you feel like you really can't sing, even if you've been singing all your life. And that's alright; that's part of the journey to becoming a better singer. Remember that if you really want it, you'll get it with dedication and hard work.

And while many might not think I do, I admire and respect all of you working to develop your voices, because it is a far more personal and complex journey than becoming an instrumentalist.
Hey, Thankyou for nice feedback! I have just put up this weeks episode here

ADVANCED MIX WORKOUT

Shelby takes Caitlyn through a series of advanced exercises to take her mix to the next level. This lesson is designed for advanced singers to get the most out of their mix, but beginners are encouraged to take a look, to see what is possible with The Singing Success Method.

really good lesson, thankyou Shelby and Caitlyn!

A few questions for singing success users
Hey guys I just ordered SS a month ago and I'm currently on disc 5.
here's a few questions if you don't mind

1. What do I do after 6 months?
-I know it's still a long way to go but what happens after I finish SS?
I ordered Mastering Mix and Mastering Vibrato but those are just 2
points I'm going to be working on after SS, so what do I do to keep
on improving on everything even after 6 months of SS.

2. Is it okay to practice SS more than 1x a day?
-I'm currently on summer vacation and I wanna take advantage of that.
I don't know if it's advisable but let's say I do SS 2x a day or even
3x a day (very unlikely but might happen), is it okay?

3. What kind of stuff do you do before/after you do SS?
-I mean what kind of warm up do you do? Do you actually warm up before?
How long before do you sing every session?

That's about it thank you very much!
1, In a sense you can't really ever finish it, you never really get to the end with technique even in 10 years you'll still be improving and refining even the more basic exercises.

2, Some people do morning and then evening, it could work I find once a day is fine but then you could be doing 2 x 15 mins or 1 x 3 hrs, it's more about how much time you work than how many times. If you are serious about singing then an hour a day is a minimum imo.

3, You find the CD that challenges you and go back to it and work on improving. Depending on where your technique is you'll need less or more warm up time. The better you get I have found the less time I need to warm up, but their are no solid rules each person is different, brett says his head voice takes 40 mins to warm up and he is a hardcore technician so who knows..

The Voice Blog Part 1 / 1: Why is Learning to Sing so Hard?!
I am hoping to give examples and more specific information as it develops.
I thought part one was excellent. Check out my comments on YouTube. I'm looking forward to next week.

And, if you have time, I would appreciate your critique on my music. I am Schubert here and MrJeffParks on YouTube.

Thanks!

If you feel you need to rest then do that.. However make sure that you're singing healthily. If you're feeling fatigued every time you do the exercises either you aren't applying some of the fundamental technique explained earlier in the program, or you're just pushing yourself too far for comfort, or maybe a combination of the both.
So the exercises should be as simple and comfortable as speaking?

Grabbing in higher ranges, PLEASE HELP ME
When doing vocal exercises, for example when they get really high and you are required to have a hootier/breathy sound to avoid grabbing, is it normal that after a certain point I can't make sound without feeling grabbing? ( just to confirm is grabbing like a tight compressed feeling in the throat?

Thank you and I would love any advice, this problem is really getting to me.
Thank you for replying,
Does this mean it is ok to feel like holding your breath at really high notes?
Can you develop a fuller voice at these pitches even if such a small amount of air is used?
Well it all depends.. It's complicated but I will say if you are feeling like your grabbing then you are very likely not on the right path, it should feel more like your sitting on top of the note no matter low or high.

Carl, you are an ace! Great comment. Everything is possible to him that believes. But, not without hella hard work! Smile
i needed to hear something like that lol , its just sometimes i loose sight on the long term goal , and i guess i just loose "faith" lol , but after analyzing the vocals , its basically some vocal fry with a sweet mix XD

The voice blog, topics?
Hey guys, I am going to be home again in London next week and I have set myself a goal of doing 6 months of video blogs dedicated to the voice. I will do one a week and each week will cover something new! So if anyone has a specific topic they want covered or any ideas then post and and tell me!

The first one is going to be about prioritising the fundamentals of singing and how to understand what is and isn't important when you are starting out and why. It's going to be in reference to a post I made a couple of weeks back about breathing because I think I was somewhat misunderstood.

I am somewhat guilty of over simplifying things at times but my goal is always to break things down into their simplest form so they can be easily explained.

Anyway topic ideas, please!

Carl
Maybe you could(should) also mention the dangers of practicing in a wrong way for a long time.
I have had some good ideas, will be home next week so am going to aim for April 30th as first upload which will give me a week to organize. I want to go into some real fundamental things that you don't really find much information about online. Most of the stuff on you tube is about details and not fundamentals, so my goal is to offer some kind of valuable information to people really serious about singing well.

How do you know if you're THROAT SINGING??
I've grown to understand that we should sing from the diaphragm.. but i want to set a boundary in case i do throat sing from time to time.

what are your experiences guys when it comes to throat singing? coz after really good "days" of singing , i find my voice undable to sing smooth and high for 3-5 days.. ( i do not strain when i reach the high notes )

or is it that im throat singing??? -___-

i need your opinions guys!! any answer would help!! thanks Smile
Lets ask what does it mean, singing from the throat? The muscles in the larynx have to coordinate to make sound. This happens with conscious thought it's not automatic. Involvement of the outer muscles (tongue, palette, swallow muscles) is what most people mean when they say someone is 'singing from the throat' what they really mean is the singer is not singing very efficiently, they are using muscles that they don't need, you can hear the strain.

Efficient singing only uses the muscles needed inside the larynx, and if you want to sing well you will 100% feel these coordinating as you move around the voice they have to stretch the cords to thin them out and they have to control different levels of compression, you will feel this happening you will make this happen you can't get around that.

So what I am saying is that you need to focus on getting rid of outer muscles you don't need, when this happens it's almost impossible to feel any strain at all, strain comes from outer muscle interference, that is all.

A lack of strain does not come from singing from the diaphragm it comes from the singer abandoning the use of muscles they don't need and moving towards a much more efficient way of vocalizing. The end result is the singer will be 'not singing from the throat'. So what I am saying is 'singing from the diaphragm' is the effect of efficient singing not the cause, the cause is efficient singing.
thanks for clarifying that out! Very Happy
