What excersizes should I be doing to better myself after completing the singing success program?
I am just about done with the program and my voice has gotten better, I have gone from a 7 note to a 30+ note range. BUT I am not where I want to be, there is still strain when I sing any where besides my "money" range and some shakey-ness when I am not in my complete comfort zone. I need to know what excersizes to do/ what discs/tracks I should revisit to assist in helping this problem as I do not want to start all over again. Thank You!!!
I have a hard time breaking into head from chest. Because of how I was trained, to use chest voice head voice is like foreign territory for me so I find myself pulling up chest when it should be head. I have a good head voice when a. on key b. I can actually break into head voice. I feel like it shouldnt require so much thinking to break into head... any help is greatly appreciated!!!
Singing is a reflex. So it should become an automatic response once you have the muscle memory down.

What I think has happened is (since you seem to have the exercises perfect) that when you go into "singing mode" you chance your mindset and go back to your old ways of thinking it's too hard.

So take one of the exercises for head voice, (use one that works the best for you)
and incorporate that into your song. So use the exercsie instead of the lyrics. This will train your mind to think that it's not as hard as it seems.
Another thing you can do is just make sounds all day. Use sounds and exercises that get you into that heady place. And try doing chest exercsies then going into head. And going from head to chest And you don't need to use the scales for this. Just go around making noises. Smile

what exercises to keep the larynx natural
hey folks
when I'm trying to sing a song i have a problem in the high notes i can't keep my larynx down and natural
can you guys advise me on some good exercises to control my larynx?
Robert,

The simplest way to accomplish a low larynx is simply to yawn. Place your hand on your adam's apple. Then yawn and feel it drop. Keeping your hand on your throat, yawn as you vocalize through your bridges. Notice all the space that opens up and the coolness in the back of your throat. These are sensations that you can "follow" in order to find a low larynx position. The next thing you should do is attempt a sort of half-yawn: allow the space in your throat to open up without committing to a full yawn. In doing so, you will be learning to control the height of your larynx. Adding "guhs" or "buhs" to your half-yawns will help you find cord closure. Lastly, do you best to avoid jaw and tongue tension; they will only make it more difficult for you.

Remember, the goal is ultimately to achieve a neutral larynx position, regardless of where you are singing in your range. But because the larynx naturally wants to rise as we ascend into our head voice, even achieving a "neutral" larynx position may feel excessively low at first. And so, when you are first figuring how to keep the larynx down, don't be afraid to let it feel excessively low. Doing so will help build the proper strength for keeping the larynx neutral later on. Once the proper muscle coordinations are built into your voice, keeping the larynx at a neutral position will begin to feel more comfortable.
Forcing your larynx down is just as bad as letting it shoot up. You shouldn't fight the natural tendencies of your larynx; as you go higher, it has to go up, but it should never go up to the point where it disappears in your neck and you're choking off the sound. You should notice that if you keep an open throat, your larynx will stay in a position where your voice makes more natural phonations than when you're forcing it down. In the end, all you're going to get is a hollow, thin and empty sound with no depth or resonance.

Don't focus on keeping your larynx down. Focus on not letting it shoot up. Fighting the transition is just going to cause vocal damage in the long run.

Finding Whistle Voice
Hello,

it´s been a while I posted something here.
Anyway, I would like to know how to properly find whistle voice. I probably should have it for a long time, but I rather stayed on the save side with my voice, but I always hate it approaching a barrier when in head voice due to lack of the whistle voice.
you'd checked out brett's videos on whistle voice right? im pretty sure it's the easiest way to approach it, probably just take time to make it sound nice
yeah I watched them months ago. I probably have to build more edge in my head voice, so that I don´t hurt myself when finding whistle. As always = a strong fundations leads to success.

Also sorry for the spam, the page seems to be delayed. deleting don´t work either, which is weird.

Is there a list of sstv videos ?a list from begginer to more advanced?
Is there a list of sstv videos ? like first see vocal warmup part 1 , then vocal warmup part 2 , then etc... a list from begginer to more advanced?
They are all worth a watch, whether you're a beginner or advanced singer. But Jesse Nemitz' videos are particularly good for beginners.
they´re all worth it, but if you are watching for a video of any particular level then look at the beginning of the list at videos. There is a divison of different levels like beginners - intermediate - advanced or so

How long should I stay on one lesson before moving on, and should I sing songs before my breaks are smoothed out?
As stated above
1. How long should I stay on a SS cd before moving on?

2. How should I sing while still learning all of this? Obviously as a beginner my mix is extremely weak assuming that I've properly found it. I had some singing lessons before I had ever heard  of Brett, unfortunately, the teacher wasn't a professional and basicly told me that I could reach high notes if I just pushed hard enough with my diaphragm. ( I know what you're probably thinking right now...ouch, big time) being in tune hasn't really been a problem for me and I've overcome a lot of strain by doing the exercises. So should I just not sing songs until I'm advanced enough? Or should I sing like I do now, only pulling chest a little bit? I can't really use Brett's methods publicly because I haven't developed them enough.

3. I actually went through the whole program (started in may- did I go too fast?) and am now realizing I should have payed more attention to detail instead of just going through the exercises.

Any comments/tips are very much appreciated
Thanks,
Mike
To L.L: thanks, thats kinda what I was thinking

Really? I seem to have a problem with E's and A's ( long) my throat tightens up when I sing them. Usually O's and mums help relax it
same here... building strong fundamentals is the key. As you have build them, you just have to do it - working from day to day.

My latest blog post: So what's wrong with singing from the throat?
Just FYI and MHO. Remember, my blog is just my own opinions and stuff, I am in no way an SS expert, just a vocal student, like yourselves.

you´re right.. I see Shelby´s last video (the one about volume and relaxation) gave you something to think about. As expected from you hahaSmile

I also agree: To stay in pocket and sing freely you don´t have to think about it or focus so much. Changing pitch has to happen automatically (and instinctively). Since this is what we exercise for.

I know that but sometimes we tend to make things harder then they are by focusing too much.
Great post and great reminder!
haha, thanks, Vaqm! i hadn't though specifically about shelby's video, but you are right, there is a correlation. have an awesome day. Smile

SS should take more care of its forum
Things here are really going bad with all these spams. Singing Sucess doesn't provide a moderador to the forum, so everything is kinda thrown into garbage. We should contact people from the website
As SSTV has gained popularity, it has also attracted an unwanted element of spamming. Its a daily battle and we are working on a solution. Thank you for your feedback. As always you can simply just use the contact form(by clicking on the "contact" menu option) and let us know your complaints Smile
Thank you, SSTV!
