Cough Cough... freakin COUGH!
I've had the worst cold ever for like 2/3 weeks. I've been coughing NON stop. This week i've kind of got my voice back, a little bit of coughing, but i've totally lost my whistle voice and my nose isn't clogged, but It's not working right... ugh... anyone else going through this?
Maybe there's still a lot of mucus on your cords. This happened to me when I was sick. Instead of whistle voice though, I couldn't sing beyond my second break in head voice. The cords thin as you go higher so I would think that as you sing higher, any resistance to vibration i.e. mucus in this case, would have a greater effect on preventing said vibration.
Youre not alone ^^ I just went through this, was sick for five days. My nose wasnt clogged either and i didnt have mucus, but for some reason the sound wouldnt come out when i did what I always do. It was a really weird feeling, like hey, where did the sound go.

Im doing lip rolls and tongue trills to regain my whistle notes while squeaking up there untill the notes become free and floating. It's slowly coming back. I know youll get yours back too in a couple of days, dont worry, and its so not worth getting frustrated over, you know how to get there again instinctively ^^

Singing Success just isn't working for me.
I've been stuck on the first lesson (disc 3) for over a month now. I'm still horribly inconsistent. Some days I sound great, other days I break constantly and can't even do the warm up exercises (lip rolls etc) without frequent breaks. Some days I can go rather high up the scale with my chest voice alone before needing to switch to head voice, and other times I can't hit middle C with my chest voice and am forced to use my head voice from that point in the scale onwards.

I still can't do the tongue trills or nay nay nays either. I'm CAPABLE of tongue trilling, but my tongue seems to vibrate at a much higher rate than what is normal and I have to push a lot of air out really hard to actually get the trill going, which causes fatigue very quickly and often causes breaks.

As for the nay nay nays, they're just a mess. In order to reach the high notes with these I really have to reach and by the half way point every muscle in my neck is tensed. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I know that's not supposed to happen.

I just don't know what to do to get around these issues. The inconsistency I assume will diminish with time and proper technique, but I really don't know what I'm doing wrong with the tongue trills and nay nay nays. It's very discouraging to go more than a month without any improvement.
It happened the same to me, but if you are stuck on a lesson, keep going and leave it for another day, maybe just move on to disc 4 or to the style part to relax. I also use another sites to practice or listen to advices about singing. And of course, nothing better than a teacher to tell what you are doing wrong. Invest time, money, energy and everything in what you like. Success!
Well...
I can suggest you to buy a one month subscription to the site, and watch as many lessons as possible, searching those, where there are students with your same problems.

That helped me very very much, and it is not expensive.
You will also be able to download 5 lessons.
I downloaded theese, wich are very very very good:

Mix mix mix
Ugh..... my bridge in my mix is crazy hard. This year I truly discovered my chest voice, and it's so different from my head, so my mix has been so hard to get to be even. Going through my bridge seems like i'm punching through a brick wall. I'm just venting cuz i've seen brett over this problem. And it's gonna be awesome! Before I could only get to G above middle C in my mix voice (btw I have a 4 and 1/2 octave range, but doing it with a proper mix is another story lol) and now i'm a little shaky on B and C above middle C. My problem is going from chest to mix to head evenly without them all sounding completely different, Otherwise it just flips lol. Anyone else going through the same thing?
yea, this has helped a lot. I like to get as much info as possible lol from everyone's point of view. I almost think of it just keep pushing and pushing the even mix through bridge, and i've been able to take it one note at a time! my bridge is from A above middle C. to D above high C. I think. Anyways I'm still shaky, but i'm almost past it, i'm at C above high C. I can hit it, but it's a little shaky and too squeezed. So i'm working on that. but at the rate i've been going i'll be past my bridge by next month freely, I can go through my bridges on a muh, guh, etc. I was just applying it to a song that was the hard part for me. So i've been singing songs that challenge your bridge Smile
Cool! Seems like youre on the fasttrack to mastering your voice Smile. I just got there recently and its really encouraging. Its sort of a place where everything just clicks and you start progressing faster than you can get used to. Yeah, I totally agree on your information gathering idea. I always make sure to read every new thread that opens up here. Cant wait to see how amazing your voice will turn out when you have full controll over it.

Rock voice! watcha guys think?!?!
http://soundcloud.com/asheira/edge-of-glory-clip-1

YAY! or.... NAY! my voice was a little tired so the scratchy part isn't usually there. But ya know... over all watcha guys think about the sound.
Ya I took it down lol I wanted to try out for this thing, and edge of glory was the song I had to sing, and it didn't sound good light, and apparently aggressive, it's a super hard song to sing without getting super powerful and aggressive, otherwise it sounds BORING Razz I guess it was not the right song for me Razz
sing whatever you want never think a song isnt right for you! :Smile making a song yours thats by a different artist even if its a completley different genre then the style you enjoy singing is difficult but achievable, it helps you as a artist to learn how to make songs you create, legendary. all it takes is passion, which you clearly have. go full force with it. also i cant ever imagine your voice being boring its to beautiful to me to have any boring quality! Smile never stop!

why vocal classes could be a fraud....BE AWARE
I dont know what some people might say with regard to this post but i have been thinking a lot about taking some private classes with a certified SLS instructor and i went to go see one the other day in my area but found that they were trying to complicate everything and they had this "Egocentric" way of explaining stuff, by complicating so many things to get you to almost panic about your voice and feel like you need to hold on to their expertise with every bit of energy in your body. How can you trust a voice teacher or anyone else for that matter when there is monetary gain at stake? and if not for monetary gain, perhaps an ego boost because vocal lessons are just so hard and to be a great singer you need a lifetime of service right? Wrong..... i am not saying somebody is not going to give you good bang for your buck, but its just hard for these reasons to really know for sure. I think the answers and knowledge may exist within the person/coach. I am not saying they are not skilled in what they do, but will they do it with integirty? to make my point, i quote Stephan D levitt from the book "Freakonomics"

"How any expert treats you depends on how that experts incentives are set up"
i do learn on my own, and i still do believe in the art of vocal instruction. i just thought it would be interesting to hear what everyone here had to say. i am not saying dont take classes, just keep these things in mind and perhaps be aware of it.
youre right tandanus, its like underwear.... needs to be a good fit or your equipments gets uncomfy

Experimenting witha new voice style

Whatcha guys think. It's just a portion of apologize-onerepublic but I just decided to do a short sample. you guys can check out my other style from my "station"
Yeah, I see where you are going with it and I like it. You are lucky in that you can sing airy/angelic AND smoldering/deep, so I think you should incorporate both in your songs. You are very versatile and have a great range.
I agree, sounds cool. Would like to hear you do some more

Scientific thoughts on water and voice
So I recently had a sales man come over. And... lol this is probably a bad way to start off a story, but he had no clue I was a vocalist, and was telling me the difference between hard water and soft water. Even through my filtered water, our water was hard. Hard meaning it had particles of rock in it. He said most filtered water ( deerpark, bottled water, etc.) still was hard. and proved it. This all got me thinking on the effects it has on the voice. Even Brett talks about things like milk or cheese, that it effects the voice, but if you actually took a microscope to the vocal folds there won't be any cheese or milk seen but still has an effect. So not saying there are rocks stuck in our vocal chords, but .... could it effect us? hmmmm maybe i'm crazy mental lol
Maybe you won't see this since it's a month old, but this is BS, pardon my french. Softened water removes metal ions from the water, which makes household chores like cleaning with soap easier. Also it stops corrosion and limestone from being build up in plumbing. But this actually makes it unsuitable for drinking, since for example you'll be taking in a lot of lead. Hard water has nothing to do with 'rocks' in your water, but the amount of metal ions and other minerals, like calsium. These are primarily healthy in normal doses, so hard water is better for drinking.
Sorry, bad explanation because I didn't understand that salesman. Filtered water is obviously better, you are removing physical particles. If that salesman was actually talking about making water scientifically 'soft', that would be silly. You need the nutrients (ie. only having water in water is not really healthy).
Filter your water all you want.

I'm just so tired of my power sounding annoying

I love this woman, she's so amazing. This is what I want, a richer sounding power, but mine is so high pitched and whiney... it's really annoying. Does this comes with extending the lower range of the voice? Or am I just not meant to be powerful haha what should I do ? lol anyone feel me on this subject?
Brett says I have real thick chords. and a very powerful voice, but i'm totally a soprano and I sound whiney. I have power freely but it doesn't sound very nice. Not strained or anything just weird sound. annoying really.
Maybe it's just because when you listen to yourself it will always sound a little weird? It will always sound like you which to other people is amazing but to you may just seem pretty boring. I know I'm extremely bored with the sound of my voice often I have wondered if there is any life in it at all!

If your having sessions with Brett and working hard I wouldn't even worry about it. He is one of the best teachers in the world so your in safe hands and just put all you trust in him 'Brett knows'.

At the end of the day a nice sound is just an end result and like I said ALL voices will sound nice when they are used well without interference from outer muscles. What I'm saying is don't focus much on the outcome focus on the process, the outcome is a result but if you focus on the outcome you'll always sound bad because that is what bad singing is! Bad singing is outcome focused, it's singing that is focused on 'sounding good'. Good singing is process focused, it's focused on 'what do I need to do?'.

What am i doing wrong?
I have been using the singing success program on and off since january. But I have been trying the past two months to be consistent using it every other day. But it isnt helping me.

I get through the hums without tension. Just normal warm up.

I can do the lip rolls, practice them almost everyday for a little, but I always hit my break hard and flip, or feel like im pushing it if i dont. What am i doing wrong?

I can't do tongue trills either. I seem to strain my voice whenever I try. Is there a good method to learn? I know i could skip this, but its something i would like to learn.

I have taken vocal lessons before, and worked on proper breathing techniques. I know I am not keeping my larnex down when i get near my break with the lip rolls. I have tried bending over and such, and it isnt helping much
it's breaking cuz you don't have consistant chord closure, and pharyngeal helps too, those are the main things that will help you have better bridge connection... in my opinion. Record your exercises.. and keep going. And if you really think your doing it wrong as one of us to skype or get a lesson. they'll help you,
My singing isn't very consistent. So you are right. I'm gonna try to move on, then i will see about the skype lesson

ok my original song...
http://soundcloud.com/asheira/falling

It's super heady.. I know, but i'm questioning if i should take it down a key?? comments and positive criticism wanted Wink
to you as well! Smile
It's a good idea sales, the other way to do it is to have an 'easy' version of the song in the same key by either making the high bits more heady or altering the melody a little. This would be for the bad days, either way your right it's nice to have options when you are going on stage because it means you can adjust to however you are feeling that day.
