Help with gritty Rock Vocals
Hi, guys. I watched this SS video and I wanted to try and learn this as much as I want to sing metal & rock. If anyone else is more experienced when it comes to this, please comment on it, as I'm still trying to figure this out. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a link to a track of me practicing this stuff. Please hava a listen and tell me how to improve:

I think I did better in this one since I was happy in this video. My last video made a lot of people cry, so I made this one to make up for it.
I just uploaded my new video, "Love Story" by Taylor Swift, with me singing and playing piano. I had a lot of fun making this video. I hope you like it!
My dad is in the film. He said he wasn't acting, he was practicing for real life! Very Happy
Thank you!

First of all, I want to say that you have a great voice. You could probably do much harder songs than these. I would say you hit the notes quite effortlessly, even with a headset on, which I know complicates things a lot. But with the ease I can hear in your voice, I know you could make more out of this song, your voice has more than what is shown here.

I would advice you to record keyboard and vocals separately, because it seems to me you are in a bit of a hurry playing this song. I feel that way because your keyboard playing is kinda staccato, and would probably be more comfortable if you could make it legato, and link the notes together a bit more smoothly. The same thing goes for your vocals, I don't think you are taking the time to really make the song with your vocals. Sure, you're not making any real mistakes, but with your voice, you could add a lot more to this song.

At last I want to say; cool video overall. Cool concept to make the vocal cover with a video, nicely, smoothly edited and all. If you could record vocals and keyboard separately it would be truly amazing. Just some ideas, hope that helps Smile
Thank you so much. I haven't been here for awhile.
I appreciate your suggestion. Smile
I don't know how to mix the sound, so the music you are hearing is raw. Sad
I am going to post another video of mine "In the arms of an Angel". My friend mixed sound for me. I hope you like it.

Do I Need to Loosen Up?
During my last singing performance, I had a few people tell me that I was really tense...what do you think?

It sounds like you are pushing too much imo, not only here but on other videos too. I don't know which style you learned to sing, but I myself sing classic choral music atm. and we are taught to sing a bit more natural than this, with a bit less strain. Your singing sounds a bit too nasaly and strained, judging from how I've learned to sing.

However: when I listen to this song on Youtube I find that it is sung with a typical classic voice with lots of vibrato. If your tension comes from an attempt at singing with a lot of vibrato, you just have to work on doing that more natural and relaxed. When I started singing classical I really sung a lot like this, but now I've given up the constant vibrato singing because it doesn't feel that natural. If you however do want to sing that way, try what I tipped you about above. All in all, this is quite good for someone your age, though. Wink
you have a very strong voice but (im not an expert @ judging singers) i think you need to round the vowels maybe? Very Happy it would be really nice to lessen the whiny part of your voice so yeah i think you need to loosen up. but overall its great, with bits of practice i think it would be perfect. just my opinion Very Happy

finding unique voice
Hi guys, lately i have been noticing quite a few improvements with my singing voice from the SS and mastering mix cd's i have been practicing. Also i have been managing to sing along with some of my favorite artists/singers by imitating the way they sing. However the thing is, as much as i love singing along and intimating with my favorite songs, i would really love to start singing along with these my own unique singing voice. I also listen to a wide rage of genres and pretty much in every genre i listen to there are artists that i really like the sound of their singing style/voice. So guys i was wondering how do i go about moulding/forming my own unique singing voice by collecting aspects of my favorite artists singing styles? e.g. like i admire Stevie Wonder's mix voice and then i also love Adam Levines mix voice and also prince's head voice etc. I don't want to sound like a exact copy of my favorite singers but they are particular tones/singing styles (head voice, mix voice etc) that i am admire that they have. I hope it won't be a problem for me because my favorite artists range from rock to old rnb/funk and there are artists in all those genres that have styles singing styles that i admire.

Thanks guys
I think it's important to remember that just by singing with your own voice, you have a unique voice. If you want to make your own style to your singing you could try singing just with background music, and no vocals. That way you can improvise and sing the song the way you want to. Just play around have fun while singing and sing the way you want. That way you'll find and create your unique voice and style.
You will figure out this stuff as soon as you start making your own music. If you want to make your own style through covers, then plan the covers before-hand. Plan what you want to do differently. But if you make your own music and you are the first one to sing that song you will automatically blend together what you've learned from your influences and it shouldn't be something that you have to worry about, it just happens naturally.
