Is it head or falsetto?
I'm currently on lesson 4 of SS, after having used the program for several months I reached the lesson on vocal fry, or the 'edgy sound'. I don't know whether i'm using head or falsetto at the higher pitches, for it's not breathy like brett's example of edgy falsetto, but then it falls apart when i try to increase the volume - which denotes falsetto according to his examples. I'm wondering whether what i considered head was simply airy chest voice, or falsetto. I CAN identify my head voice by saying 'wheee' or 'hoooo', but i don't know how to access it when i'm doing the other exercises Sad. Hence, i can't improve my range or my head voice until i can access it in the rest of the exercises! Any ideas on what i can do to solve this?
Can you post a registration?
Not quite sure what you mean by that, but I'm happy to say that I've truly found my head voice now. It uses quite different muscle co-ordination to that of falsetto, and resonates in a more upward region than that of chest voice. I believe the discovery came, not really as a result of a single tip or exercise, but continued practice of the SS exercises, though sometimes whilst placing my thumb/finger under my chin, to loosen the digastric muscle and to ensure that I would produce the sounds without using the said muscle. Although my first sounds were pretty wimpy - and perhaps that was the reason I was so discouraged at first - they've gradually been growing stronger.
So, take heart if you have the same 'problem' - just continue with the exercises, though also try to perform many of them with a thumb under the chin, to ensure a loose digastric muscle!

question for those who learned vibrato??
So I'm working on my vibrato (because I think it's better to master the vibrato first before doing the full singing success program), and I just want to know how long would it take to master it? I'm on the 2nd CD of Mastering Vibrato Series, on the "starting car" part. So far I can do the quadruplets for 102 BPM (fastest). so anyway how long did it took you to develop the vibrato?
...and also try to follow my suggested program. PERHAPS it will help you (I had difficoulties similar to yours).
yey thanks!

LIP ROLLS problem
well first off, nobody answered my question about headaches yet... it you have any info on that, go check out tht post... second, everytime i try the lip-rolls, i go into falsetto, which it's supposed to prevent you from doing. I also cant do toungue trills
Can you record your voice while you do a lip rolls exercise?
First of all, if a choordination gives you a headache, Im guessing your putting in way to much physical effort into singing and that choordination should just be forgotten. It also seems a bit dangerous and not particularly healthy so drop that one ^^

Regarding your lip rolls, its really difficult to pin point the problem unless we hear a clip just like AndreaFontana wrote, and second of all what you percieve as falsetto could be head voice. Is it breathy? The only distinction between head voice and falsetto in SS terminology is that falsetto is disconnected and breathy, head voice is connected and has a clarity to it.

Doing chord closure excercises in your head voice/falsetto range, such as vocal fry and edge excersises up there vill definitely strengthen your high notes and make your lip rolls easier. Though lip rolls are usually so light that this usually isnt necessary even for untrained beginners. Wow, Im rambleing right now so I'll stop.

Just one last thing, also post a clip on your attempt on the tongue trills. A lot of people have trouble doing them so dont feel bad, youll get it. For now just try rolling your "rrrs", just say the word "arriba" and hold out the rrrs and you have a tongue trill. Good luck!

Singing Success just isn't working for me.
I've been stuck on the first lesson (disc 3) for over a month now. I'm still horribly inconsistent. Some days I sound great, other days I break constantly and can't even do the warm up exercises (lip rolls etc) without frequent breaks. Some days I can go rather high up the scale with my chest voice alone before needing to switch to head voice, and other times I can't hit middle C with my chest voice and am forced to use my head voice from that point in the scale onwards.

I still can't do the tongue trills or nay nay nays either. I'm CAPABLE of tongue trilling, but my tongue seems to vibrate at a much higher rate than what is normal and I have to push a lot of air out really hard to actually get the trill going, which causes fatigue very quickly and often causes breaks.

As for the nay nay nays, they're just a mess. In order to reach the high notes with these I really have to reach and by the half way point every muscle in my neck is tensed. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I know that's not supposed to happen.

I just don't know what to do to get around these issues. The inconsistency I assume will diminish with time and proper technique, but I really don't know what I'm doing wrong with the tongue trills and nay nay nays. It's very discouraging to go more than a month without any improvement.
It happened the same to me, but if you are stuck on a lesson, keep going and leave it for another day, maybe just move on to disc 4 or to the style part to relax. I also use another sites to practice or listen to advices about singing. And of course, nothing better than a teacher to tell what you are doing wrong. Invest time, money, energy and everything in what you like. Success!
Well...
I can suggest you to buy a one month subscription to the site, and watch as many lessons as possible, searching those, where there are students with your same problems.

That helped me very very much, and it is not expensive.
You will also be able to download 5 lessons.
I downloaded theese, wich are very very very good:

CLASSICAL TECHNIQUE FOR THE COMMERCIAL SINGER Data: 6 Agosto 2009
SMART SINGING di Jesse Nemitz. Data: 14 Aprile 2010
SPLIT OF RESONANCE: PART I PHARYNGEAL di Shelby Rollins. Data: 20 Luglio 2011
SPLIT OF RESONANCE: PART II EDGE di Shelby Rollins. Data: 25 Agosto 2011
CONTROLLING YOUR LARYNX di Shelby Rollins. Data: 20 Ottobre 2011

In general, I suggest you the lesson of Jesse and Shelby.

Download all option for us Full Access members?
Hi,
I just purchased my second year's annual full membership. I want to download all the videos at once without having to click on each and every video, wait for it to refresh the page, click on the download link, then download the .mov version and audio version separately. That'll waste about two straight days of my life. Can you please fill me in on the way to do this easier? I hope you review these posts and respond.
Thank you,
Dave
Agreed. But what's interesting is when I'd posted that, I was in the web issues section. No idea how it ended up in general discussion. Not moveable?
Mmmmh... I don't know...

Trick to do the first application exercise
Do you have difficulties in doing the first application exercise ("and the rockets red glare")?

For me it was very difficult: in order to avoid pulled up chest voice (never pull up your chest voice!) my voice was too weak and "empty" (girly and hooty, too similar to falsetto voice).

Here how I solved the problem.

Don't directly do the exercise in its standard way (it can be too difficult):

"mum mum mum mum mum mum...
...and the rockets red glare".

but do it in the following manner, using EXACTLY the SAME sounds you discovered in the previous exercises of the lesson (listen very carefully the explanations of Brett about those sounds):

1
"no no no no no no...
...nuuh nuuh nuuh nuuh nuuh nuuh"

2
"nuuh nuuh nuuh nuuh nuuh nuuh...
...mum mum mum mum mum mum"

3
"mum mum mum mum mum mum...
...(the 6 vowels of "and the rockets red glare"; BUT with initial and final 'm's)"

4
(the 6 vowels of "and the rockets red glare"; BUT with initial and final 'm's)...
...and the rockets red glare"

5
"and the rockets red glare...
...and the rockets red glare"

6
then sing along the sung examples

Passing from 1 to 6, the changhes should be gradual. Doing the following kind of soud, remember the sensations of the previous.
Sounds 1 are very easy, sunds 5-6 are difficult.

And, in general, stay on lesson 3 a lot of time (I had to spend on it more than 1 month, working on it every day).
In my opinion, it is a very important lessono and it is important to master it well.
It si very efective, if well mastered...
"The increased pace of lip rolls and tongue trills makes them easier for me"

To me too

"It seems as if I am on somewhat of a roll now, as we say in the States"

Ho! That's too difficult for my "broken english" level...
;-)

"I realize I could refine my technique further still. This is, I think, why Brett Manning seems to have the enthusiasm of someone just starting out in singing. It must be that, even for him the insights are endless and it is always still possible to understand and master your vocal instrument more."

I would not be surprised, if in the next years Brett and his team would study and develop a new producto, to teach the "strohbass" technique of singing. Here it is:

Monkey oo - aa
Hi,

Iv'e been practicing the "oo - aa monkey sound" for a while. I've got no problems with the exercise, and I can sing from my lower to my higher register with this monkey sound.
But my question is, how do I use this for a singing voice?
I mean, with this monkey sound, I can sing almost every song with a great mix sound, but it sounds like a monkey. If I dont use the monkey sound I seem to pull up chest.

Any ideas?

Greetings
Ciao!

I think that the monkey sound exercise is useful, in order to gradually build in your larynx the muscle coordinations and memories of the mix register.
But you will never use the pure monkey sound in songs...

Similar thing happens with the "edge sound"...

Help me to understand (SS programm)
1-In SS: Don't push, force, without extremely high notes. If I do that, then my voice will sound very weak and vocal range is very narrow. In some exercises, when I go to the head voice, I just need to apply more air to resound, but I do not want to press. What can I do with this problem?

2-When I do a tongue trill, especially feel the pain in the base of the tongue and under the Adam's apple when to sing the chest and head voice. This problem is how can I be?

3-When I make a humming, then can I go to the head voice? If you need to feel the vibration in the lips and so on - can I use the head voice in this exercise, or whether only the chest voice?

4- I want to ask about the vocal fry. This should be done as a siren or have the notes, as well as other exercises? Which is better?

5-Prompt some herbal teas can help warm up the vocal cords, improve blood circulation? Maybe it's some kind of grass or something like that? What herbs can drink to warm up the vocal chords?

Thank you so much, waiting your reply! God bless!
Thank you man, you rock! Wink
great info! should be on the front page for beginners really !
