Chest/Head voice problem.
January 26, 2012 at 3:05PM
I have been using Singing Success for about a month and i am really having a problem reaching my head voice.

It seems like I'm either singing in a really high and straining chest voice or i go directly from my chest voice to my whistle voice (skipping both head and falsetto).

If there is anyway anyone can help please do.

It's deficult for someone to describe in words how to find your head voice. I think you should search the videos here in sso rather than in the forum cause you need to hear sounds. The easiest way to find your head voice is trying to immitate someone who does it.
For beginners the difficult thing about head voice is that it's incredibly easy. You shouldn't try to pull it out of you, just let it go there. It shouldn't be a "reaching" of head voice rather than a landing in head voice. You shouldn't feel any pressure at all in your throat.

Here's a video that might help you:

Try to immitate the "owl sound" he does.

I tried the owl sound and it didnt work. I tried this trick i use sometimes to do joke around sing opera with my friends. (basically what i do is force/push air through until it comes out as my head voice which i know is not healthy to my vocal chords at all) It worked but it only gave me 5 super high notes and after 2 minutes of working with it my voice got tired. Any other advice?

I think that you aren't lowering your larynx enough. That's the trick that makes high notes easy and full. You have found your head voice it just isn't easy yet. To make it comfortable yawn and then try to keep your larynx in the same position when you make sound. Use Gee or Goo.
See what I wrote about the Goo's in this thread http://www.singingsuccess.tv/forums/general-discussion/9055/
Immitating opera singers is a nice trick, maybe you should try not to make reeeeeeally loud and big. Just enough. I hope this helps.
There is a cd just for head voice in the Mastering Mix program (Cd 2).

Oh and bending at the waste might help, while doing a Weeee or any head voice exercise. (sorry if I'm becoming tiring)

I'm really happy to hear about your progress!
In my experience, all guys that go into head voice think their voice sounds like a woman in the beginning. In time your head voice will become stronger and go into a more "forward" position and then it will start sounding more normal and connected.

about how long do you estimate my head voice will strengthen? I put in at least 2 hours a day of working on my singing.

I definately can't know this. I haven't even heard you. Everyone progresses in their own time, and progress depends on soooooo many things. Still, it shouldn't take long to start seeing results. As long as you try not to expect them. Have faith they will come. It's like finding love, it comes when you least expect it and think about it Razz So, I'm gonna risk it and say that you may find differences even in a week.
Try to take a break one day from the head voice exercises and do something else. Then, when you get back to them you'll have a whole new perspective. It has helped me many times to take a break from one particular cd and area of the voice.
