There really isn't much history, just that Brett was very smart when he thought of this idea. This is by far one of the best yet simple excersizes to combine a consistant airflow with a connection through all the bridges. When you look at what's going on in the lip roll, you notice, air moves your lips. Nothing else. If you keep the lips moving at the same speed on bottom as on top, you aren't "pushing" for the top notes. Rather you are safely working your way up to the top very smooth. It truly is a great excersize, i do it everyday. After a few months of working with it, you will notice an improvement. I know i did.

Also; I was wondering if there were predecessors to this exercise that it eventually evolved into; namely vocalizing that was designed to "redirect tension" and send the right amount of airflow, and coordinate the diaphragm and vocal folds simultaneously?
What is the history of this magical tool for the voice?
