I used to have this problem for a LONG time. (we're speaking months)

The problem was either of the following:
1. Eating/drinking too many dairy products.
2. Overworking the voice.
3. Using the mouth as a vocal resonator (which is, in enough time, fixed by lesson 2 of singing success... keeping your larynx relaxed is very important).

I hope this helps, let me know how it goes.

I've been having this problem for a few months now (since a flu). Sad

To add on to the previous point, eliminate oil from your diet. It's a killer when it comes to phlegm (at least for me it is).

Also, try eating an apple. The PH in apples are the same in people. The phlegm will stick to the apple and it should help get ride of it. Also, don't clear your throat. The more you clear the more your body will create. You could also be having allergies, maybe if you've changed something in your diet.

My throat has been sore all day (ever sense I sang threw the night, last night:rollSmile
Hot salt water seems to have really helped, and I am in the process of brewing some quality Chinese tea

I will also eat an apple after reading this page Smile

-question:
Is there a page on this site that talks about preventing a sore throat? I have been thinking about gargling hot salt water on a weekly basis. Is there a point where doing this will become a bad thing? What else can I do. Links please!! Smile

also, when you have a soar throat I understand that it is best to lay off your voice for until it is feeling better? however, if it is absolutely necessary that you sing, what changes if any should you make to singing with a soar throat? different exercises? sing softer? turn the mic up?!

I had terrible trouble with phlegm for several years and tried all sorts of dietary solutions. However it turned out to be a result of poor technique - I was straining my voice by singing too loud and forcing chest voice too high. When I got a better understanding of mixed voice and keeping the larynx lower the phlegm and mucus stopped being a problem - it was simply my body protecting my vocal chords against damage

Whenever I feel that way I brush my teeth, and ESPECIALLY my tongue, and it goes away. Becareful not to brush too far back if you can't take it because you'll activate the gag reflex, and cause acid to come up- so take it easy.
